Process Engineer

We launched Neo-Pure to solve a food safety challenge for dry foods like seeds, grains, and nuts. Traditional solutions do not work for these dry foods. Unlike milk, which is pasteurized, and lettuce, which is sprayed with chlorine, nothing is done for food safety for most dry foods. As a result, there are outbreaks and recalls due to food poisoning, and the industry is in search of a standard solution.
Neo-Pure can become the new food safety standard for dry foods. It uses a validated combination of chemistry and equipment to control pathogens such as Salmonella on nuts, seeds, and grains. Unlike pasteurization, Neo-Pure keeps foods raw, organic, and viable. It is a liquid solution that is applied on nuts, seeds, and grains in its Food Safety System as a validated intervention step at food processing sites. After launching Neo-Pure in 2016, we have more than fifteen food processors that are, or will soon be, using Neo-Pure in their Food Safety Systems.

The Process Engineer role will primarily focus on the development of a new Food Safety System. The individual will participate in all phases of the project and be responsible for the design, implementation, and support of the latest version of the Agri-Neo Food Safety System.

Key Responsibilities

• Mechanical Process design
• Thermodynamic and fluid mechanics designs – heat and mass balance
• Sizing and selection of major mechanical equipment such as pumps, heat exchangers, filters, conveyors, and other equipment
• Integration of mechanical equipment with the central control
• Process control design related to mechanical systems
• Complete mechanical and mechanical-based project tasks that include, but not limited to Initial design criteria and basis for design drawings, P&IDs o Define, select, and size critical equipment for mechanical systems o Review, correct, and sign design drawings o Set out ITPs and documentation packages for process and mechanical systems o Inspection, approvals and verification of components and assemblies in both fab shop and field environments, including as-built of final project o Support commissioning and start-up of mechanical systems
• Audit existing internal processes and mechanical designs for performance problems
• Provide pre-sales process and mechanical system support to sales teams
• Support coordination of assembly/construction work with subcontractors and vendors
• Perform site reviews for mechanical, electrical and process installations
• Perform in-process and final assembly inspections and approvals of process and/or mechanical systems
• Apply for and secure installation approvals from regulatory bodies such as CSA, CGA, TSSA, OSHA where applicable
• Perform site troubleshooting, technical and maintenance assistance at customer locations
• Provide mechanical code guidance and compliance requirements, including; assembly, testing, welding, and examination requirements
• Leads efforts to ensure SOP’s are in place to sustain process performance improvements.
• Develop preventative maintenance schedules for the food processing system.
• Uses a fact-based approach with data/statistical analysis to improve existing maintenance programs.
• Addresses key operational performance metrics in reliability improvement plans.
• Analyze downtime, determining root causes and recommending long-term solutions.
• Lead efforts to reduce process variability leading to waste, rate loss or compromised quality.
• Facilitates process improvements

Candidate Profile

• Execute all testing on a new food processing system, both the pilot plant and the full-scale system
• Analyze data from testing and present to the department lead
• Draft and manage P&IDs for all areas of the system, both fluid flow, and product flow
• Work with software engineers to integrate and implement software that will run the system and track all process parameters
• Integrate the system components including basic design and/or working with manufacturers in a timely manner
• Work with our Operations team and contractors to set up the electrical, gas, and mechanical components of the system
• Own the master timeline to the new system
• Work cross-functionally to ensure the system is shipped and received in a timely manner
• Responsible for implementing and testing the system at the customer site
• Draft and manage all documentation: user guides, safety guides, installation guides, troubleshooting, etc.
• Draft CAD drawings of site layouts
• Optimize the process and reduce overall downtime
• Support our sales team during the pre-sale and contracting process
• Support our Ops team post installation

Education and Experience Required
• University Undergraduate Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering is a must
• Graduate Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering is preferred
• 3 to 7 years as a Process Engineer experience in an industrial setting; Food processing experience is a plus
• Experience in R&D is a plus; General knowledge of automation and controls is a must
• Experience in the design of sanitary process systems including piping, vessels and CIP systems
• Familiarity with CFIA and HACCP requirements
• Experience in the design of fluid and bulk materials handling processes including preparation of process flow diagrams, heat and material balances and P&IDs
• Solid Knowledge of engineering codes and standards
• Proven ability in improving reliability operations through practical use of CI tools such as Six-Sigma, Total Quality, Lean Manufacturing, TPM or related process improvement methodologies

Candidate Profile
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Must be able to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems
• Close attention to detail for testing and documentation
• Proficient in AutoCAD, able to present technical data and drawings to engineers, scientists, and department heads both internally and externally
• Ability to adjust and think quickly on your feet both internally and in front of customers is a must
• Must be able to work with contractors effectively
• Prior experience with industrial equipment in the food industry is a plus
• Experience working with Microsoft Project or similar software
• Strong ability to manage a timeline, both high level and detailed
• Ability to travel within North America (Canada and the US) is a must
